Notre Dame College Teams, Athletes Receive National Recognition for Academic Achievement

The Notre Dame College women’s and men’s swimming squads have both been named national Scholar All American Teams for 2013, and two College golfers have earned individual All American Scholar honors.

The women’s swim team, with a group grade-point average (GPA) of 3.48, received top 10 recognition from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), while the men’s squad made the top 15 with a team 3.12 GPA

“One of our goals this past season was to earn this recognition for both of our teams,” said Head Coach Mark Dziak. “I'm extremely proud of the teams' accomplishments in the pool and especially the classroom. We're going to keep stressing the importance of academics and developing quality all-around individuals.”

The Notre Dame women’s swim squad was one of about 50 teams to earn CSCAA Scholar All American Team honors, and the Falcon men were among 31 recognized nationwide.

In order for teams to qualify for the CSCAA Scholar All American recognition, they must have a collective GPA of 3.0 or higher.

In addition, two Notre Dame women’s golfers, junior Natalie Briganti and sophomore Christine Bilas, have been named individual All-American Scholars by the Women's Golf Coaches Association  (WGCA).

Briganti, from Hudson, Ohio, is majoring in early childhood education. Bilas, from Youngstown, Ohio, is studying sports management.

“I am very proud of both Natalie and Christine,” said Colleen Groomes, head coach of the women’s golf team. “This award is a great representation of the effort that they put in both on the course and in the classroom.”

NCAA Divisions I, II and III recognized a total of 644 women's collegiate golfers with All American Scholar status this season.

To be eligible for the WGCA honor, individual golfers must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher and compete in at least half of their team's competitive rounds during the season.
