New VP for Academic, Student Affairs

Notre Dame College has selected Dr. Nicholas R. Santilli as its next vice president for academic and student affairs. He will assume his responsibilities on July 15.

Dr. Santilli is coming to Notre Dame from John Carroll University, where has been an associate professor of psychology and has served as associate academic vice president for planning, assessment and institutional effectiveness.

Dr. Santilli is a tenured member of John Carroll’s psychology department and served as its chair from 1995 to 2003. He is the author and co-author of numerous publications and presentations in his specialty area, adolescent social and personality development. In 2003-2004, he completed an American Council on Education Fellowship, the signature higher education leadership program offered by ACE. His research interests include the development of civic engagement and volunteerism among high school and college students, moral and spiritual development, Ignatian pedagogy and emerging adulthood, and identity formation.

Dr. Santilli has spent more than 25 years teaching in higher education. He has held academic positions at Millersville University of Pennsylvania, Augustana College in Illinois and Mount Vernon College in Washington, D.C. He holds a B.A. in Psychology and M.Ed. in Educational Psychology from The University of Toledo as well as a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from The Catholic University of America.

“We are extremely pleased that Dr. Santilli will be joining the Notre Dame community,” said Dr. Andrew P. Roth, president of Notre Dame College. “Our national search for a vice president of academic and student affairs who meets our needs and expectations was extensive. We are pleased to have found a candidate of Dr. Santilli’s caliber, who is an expert in higher education in Cleveland, Northeast Ohio and beyond.”

The College began its nationwide search for a new vice president for academic and student affairs after Dr. Mary Breckenridge announced in February she would resign as Notre Dame’s provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the end of the spring semester for personal reasons.

“I am excited to be joining Notre Dame College and continuing the excellent work Dr. Breckenridge has done over the years,” Dr. Santilli said. “I believe in the mission and vision of Notre Dame College. Its Catholic values are inspiring as it helps young individuals form a moral compass and prepares them for a life of meaning and civic purpose.”

In his role of vice president for academic and student affairs, Dr. Santilli will be responsible for the College’s academic programs; athletic programs; student affairs, clubs and organizations; and the direct supervision of faculty, athletics staff, and student affairs personnel.
