Football Kicks Off This Saturday

Intercollegiate football Notre Dame College Style begins on Saturday August 28 when our Falcons take on the Mercyhurst College Lakers. Kickoff is at 7:00pm at Korb Field, located at Charles F. Brush High School in Lyndhurst.

With excitement building campus-wide, the game will be the culmination of years of hard work behind the scenes by NDC administrators and almost two years of work by head coach Adam Howard and his staff.

The Mercyhurst game will mark the first of 11 inaugural-season games for Notre Dame, which played a trial junior varsity season last year. Competing against college junior varsity and club and prep-school squads, the Falcons were impressive, going 8-0 and outscoring their opponents 312-116.Notre Dame will play five home games and six road contests in the inaugural season.

“We gathered momentum for the program last fall,” said Coach Howard, who served as defensive coordinator for six seasons at Baldwin-Wallace College before coming to Notre Dame in 2009. “We plan on using that momentum, combined with the energy created from the excitement of our first season, to build positive results this year.”

The Falcons will have approximately 80 new players in the 2010 program, with freshmen and sophomores making up more than 90 percent of the roster. “We have a strong nucleus of players returning,” said Howard, “and an outstanding recruiting class to add to our foundation.

The College and ESPN Cleveland have partnered to broadcast NDC football games and other Falcon athletic programming, beginning this fall. The multi-level agreement includes the broadcast of all 11 games of the football season with this Saturday’s opener broadcast live on ESPN 850 AM WKNR and ensuing games aired on ESPN 1540 KNR2. All games will also be streamed live on ESPNCleveland.com.

The partnership also includes the streaming of 10 basketball games on ESPNCleveland.com, a weekly show with Coach Adam Howard on KNR2 and 10 live remote broadcasts from the NDC campus on winter-sport game days from November through March.

Coach Howard will also headline the weekly KNR2 show in the fall. The show will provide an insider view of Falcon Football, complete with game highlights, a preview of the next game and an “Academic Extra Point” segment. In addition to its weekly slot on 1540 KNR2, the show will be podcast and available online at ESPNCleveland.com. The ESPN Cleveland website will also feature a Falcon Athletics page, which will offer the latest news and information on NDC’s 22 athletic programs.

With their broadcasts of football and other programming, Notre Dame College becomes the first local college or university to have games on ESPN Cleveland properties and the only other football program besides Ohio State to broadcast on WKNR or KNR2.
