Notre Dame College welcomed Superior General Sr. Mary Kristin Battles, SND, leader of the international congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame, to campus to accept the 2013 Notre Dame College Medal on behalf of the Sisters of Notre Dame.

Battles was joined by the international congregation’s Assistant General Sr. Mary Shauna Bankemper, SND, and Chardon, Ohio, Provincial Superior Sr. Margaret M. Gorman, SND, at the medal dinner ceremony June 1 at the College.

Elected the 10th Superior General by the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame of Coesfeld, Germany, Battles began serving as the corporate and spiritual leader of the worldwide congregation of more than 2,000 Sisters in February 2011.

The former congregational provincial superior of Rosa Mystica, with its center in Thousand Oaks, Calif., Battles has a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in education administration. Battles and Bankemper lead the congregation, which ministers in 19 countries on five continents, from Rome.

The Notre Dame Medal is awarded annually to an alumnus or alumna, friend of the College or civic leader in the Greater Cleveland community who exemplifies the values of the College. Recipients must demonstrate personal, professional and global responsibility through service.
