Notre Dame College Athletic Director Named to Key NCAA Leadership Role

Notre Dame College Director of Athletics Scott Swain has been appointed to the NCAA Division II Management Council.

As a member of the national council, Swain will play a key role in the decision-making processes and administration of Division II athletics across the U.S. His term of service, representing the Mountain East Conference (MEC), will begin immediately and continue through 2017.

"Recognition of Scott Swain in this way is a tribute to his abilities and leadership skills and indicates the high degree of respect shown him by his peers,” said Notre Dame President Andrew P. Roth, Ph.D. “He is a leader on our campus, a leader in the conference and an untiring advocate of the NCAA life-in-the-balance philosophy in the way he leads our coaches and student-athletes.”

As a representative on the Management Council, Swain will hear and act on member institutions’ appeals of decisions made by Division II committees or NCAA legislation staff. The committee also is responsible for making recommendations to the NCAA Presidents’ Council, implementing policies adopted by the association's executive Committee and the presidents’ Counciland interpretingthe bylaws of the division, among other duties.

"I am honored to represent Notre Dame College and the entire Mountain East Conference on this prestigious governing body,” Swain said. “The important influence the NCAA Management Council has on every Division II coach and student-athlete is extremely important. To be able to affect change on this level will be a rewarding experience. I am excited to be able to impact positive change for all of these institutions."

Swain has served as the director of athletics at Notre Dame since July 2012. In his short time at the College, he has overseen significant facility upgrades on campus and guided the Falcons move to the Mountain East Conference as a charter member. Swain leads 24 men's and women's programs and oversees a staff of more than 50 full and part-time employees.

"We are very pleased that Scott Swain has been selected to serve as the Mountain East Conference's first representative on NCAA Division II Management Council,” said Reid Amos, MEC commissioner. “Scott has outstanding vision and employs a student-centered approach when championing initiatives. He will be a strong voice and leader for the MEC in Indianapolis."

The Management Council is comprised of one member from each of the active Division II conferences, one member from Division II independent institutions and two at-large members. It meets quarterly─once in the spring, summer and fall, and then at the annual NCAA Convention.
