Notre Dame College Conducts Individualized On-campus Career Services Seminars

Notre Dame College is hosting a series of individualized career sessions on campus to connect students to employers—and more—in their targeted professions.

New to the College in spring 2018, Notre Dame’s Career Services Center is hosting multiple Career Conversations on specific industries. The seminars cover financial services Thursday, March 29; education Thursday, April 4; and information technology, Thursday, April 19. Each session is from 4-6 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on the ground floor of the College’s Administration Building. The series started with an introduction to sports-related careers in February.

The seminars feature representatives from premier employers in each of the career fields. Scheduled speakers, some of whom are Notre Dame alumni already working in the industries, will provide students with first-hand knowledge of required education and experience and expectant career progression, as well as offer introduction and entree to a myriad of different job opportunities, in the various professions.

The Career Conversations are open to all students, regardless of major. The sessions afford aspiring professionals at the College, no matter their class year, the access and advantages of a personalized career counseling meeting, an industrywide job fair and an intimate networking event all in one, two-hour event on campus. Pizza is provided, and each session includes opportunities for students to ask questions of speakers.

Financial Services

The Financial Services Career Conversation on March 29 highlights speakers from Western & Southern Financial Group, a Fortune 500 company that provides a broad range of life insurance, investments and retirement options for individuals and families and financial services to institutional clients. Western & Southern is the parent company of a group of diversified financial services businesses that operate home and field offices across the country.

Career options available with Western & Southern Financial Group range from student internships to CFO positions and span businesses like Eagle Realty Group and Touchstone Investments, which operate nationwide; National Integrity Life Insurance Co. in Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont; and Columbus Life Insurance Co. in Ohio, among others.

Education

Guest speakers at the Career Conversations Education Session represent early childhood, middle and high school and higher education institutions and cover private as well as public school systems. Professions available in the education sector range from teachers and guidance counselors to coaches and school nurses, as well as administrators, support staff and more.

Representatives from the Twinsburg, Ohio, city school district; St. Martin de Porres, a Catholic college preparatory high school in Cleveland; and Cleveland State University are scheduled to attend.

Information Technology

The Information Technology Career Conversation on April 19 encompasses entrepreneurial endeavors as well as established businesses from across the region, like Precision Test Consulting Inc. and Burke Technologies LLC.

Precision is an individually owned company in the IT business consulting services industry located in Northeast Ohio that was launched several years ago as a startup. Burke Technologies is a computer and network security firm in Pennsylvania with an emphasis in the engineering, accounting, research and management services sector.

Sports Industries

The series kicked off in spring 2018 with a Career Conversations Sports Session on February 22. In addition to professionals from the business side of the National Football League’s Cleveland Browns and Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Indians, the seminar also featured representatives from the Lake County Captains, the Minor League Baseball Class A affiliate of the Indians, and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, a professional organization for college and university athletic directors in the United States.

Anthony Hajjar, who finished his coursework at Notre Dame in fall 2017, and now works as an inside sales representative for the Cleveland Browns, also spoke to students during the event. Hajjar was a double major in business administration and finance with a minor in marketing and served as vice president for the College’s investment club.

Details on additional speakers for these and others possible sessions in the spring 2018 Career Conversations series are forthcoming. For more information, contact George Phillips, director of Notre Dame’s Career Services Center, at gphillips@ndc.edu.
