Felicia Cetkowski Messuri ’43
Felicia Cetkowski Messuri ’43, the woman who gave voice to Notre Dame College’s alma mater, passed away on Jan. 17, 2010. Felicia’s contributions to Notre Dame were numerous, but she is best remembered as the lyricist for the College’s hymn.
“I am a collegian of a Catholic woman’s college,” Felicia said in a 1942 article in the Catholic newspaper Sunday Visitor. “The walls of my Alma Mater are no less sacred to me than the Ark of the Covenant, no less imperative to my happiness and my godliness than the stone of the catacombs, no less sweet and beloved than the Holy House of Nazareth.
“Within the halls of my college I have found this Christianity you write of … Notre Dame in South Euclid, Ohio, has nurtured that faith in me, and I shall carry it, by the grace of God, to others.”
Upon graduating from Notre Dame College, Felicia attended Catholic University in Washington D.C., where she earned her M.A. in drama. She then became a teacher at Marymount College, where she continued to share her knowledge and enthusiasm with her students. Her love for education never ceased. Neither did her love for Notre Dame College.
Felicia’s legacy lives on in the lyrics she penned for the Notre Dame alma mater. She will always be remembered when these words are sung with great pride at commencement: “Sons and daughters of Our Lady, ’Neath your banner, Notre Dame…”
