Don’t Just Read it…Sponge it!

Are your eyes constantly glued to your textbooks in a desperate attempt to memorize the material? They don’t have to be! There are lots of ways to absorb the material besides reading a chapter over and over again. Here are five convenient ways to sponge in the material:

  1. Socialize! If you make friends with your classmates, you are likely to have someone to study with. No matter who of you is struggling in the class, chances are, studying the material together and motivating each other can help you both succeed.
  2. If you have a Facebook or any other social networking page, add a quiz application! You can use this application to type study questions and answers for terms and objectives based on the material. Creating and taking the quiz can help you go over and absorb the material. You can also send it to your classmates so they can practice too!
  3. Do your homework with a tutor. Go over the material with a tutor in the college’s Dwyer Learning Center, ask as many questions as you like, and have him or her test your knowledge.
  4. Make sure you take notes on the material you are reading in class. Read over your notes after you are done. If you cannot understand the text, look for a summary and study questions online, but make sure you read the text along with it.
  5. After you are done, write down everything you know. This can help you recite the material and it shows how much of the material you know by heart.

Trying to remember the text word-for-word will only leave you brain-fried. Soak in new study strategies and give your mind a good work out instead. Otherwise, your brain will be nothing more than a sponge in a sink full of water!
